English Lake District Daily Briefing for Monday 23rd February 2009

Wednesday 18th - My Lake District Holiday Lake District Pictures
After a morning looking round the shops in Keswick we climbed Binsey (North of Bassenthwaite) for the first time.

Fifteen minutes later we were at the top. This is looking back towards the back of Skiddaw.

And looking the other way over the Solway Firth to Criffel. We were pleasantly surprised by Binsey, we just climbed it to tick off another Wainwright but it is a special place, very quiet with excellent views, we will definately be back on a clearer day.
Thursday 19th - My Lake District Holiday Lake District Pictures

We spent the day in Carlise, this is the covered market.

Carlise Cathedral on the outside.

And a vertical panorama of the amazing interior showing the 14th century barrel-vaulted painted ceiling and stained glass window.

Carlise Castle.

The castle keep inside the inner bailey.

A merry-go-round in the main square.
Friday 20th - My Lake District Holiday Lake District Pictures

Today is the final day of our holiday. It's been a very dull week weather wise, without any sunshine. Today's walk is to Grisedale Pike from Braithwaite, this is looking across to Skiddaw from the start of the walk.

Trying to spot our holiday home in Keswick.

About half way up, you can see the rest of the path leading up to Grisdale Pike.

Nearly there, the final climb up.

Solitude! It was icy cold on the summit of Grisedale Pike

Our next destination, Hobcarton Crag on the left and Hopegill Head on the right.

Grisedale pike from the summit of Hopegill Head.

This is Jim Davis, a professional photographer who lives in the lakes. He is off to Everest soon as the expedition photographer, you can find details on his website Jim Davis Photography.

Looking down to Force Crag Mine and the Coledale beck.

Force Crag Mine was last working metal mine in the Lake District, closing in 1991. Lead was mined from 1839 until 1865, and zinc and barytes from 1867. The mill was used to separate these minerals from each other, it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and a geological SSSI (site of special scientific interest).
Another Lake District holiday draws to a close (apart from the six hour journey home!).
