Emilia Fox, the actress, has teamed up with David Attenborough to save Britain’s butterflies. One of those most in danger is the Duke of Burgundy (Hamearis lucina) which is down by 52%. This elusive butterfly survives only in small, scattered colonies, including some in the Lake District.

The number of crimes reported against birds of prey rose by 40% in 2007 to a record level, the RSPB has said. This includes 16 in Cumbria.
