A damp day at Coniston Hall [17/7/2008 by Tony Richards]
Prior to the copper mining in the 1850's Coniston was a scattered rural commmunity settled around Coniston Hall, a 16th Century farmhouse with a fine display of round chimney. It is now owned by the National Trust (and run as a farm so is not open to the public).

The Rheged Centre, Penrith [17/7/2008 See more "Daily Pictures" from Sean McMahon]
"Rheged" was a nation of Sub-Roman Britain who spoke "Cumbric" and were situated in north-western England. The Rheged Centre has several shops, a cinema and the largest turf roof in Europe.

A recently emerged male Brown Hawker Dragonfly (Aeshna grandis) at Guildford, Surrey [17/7/2008, my own picture]
The colour will get darker over the next few hours. It is found in the Lake District on tarns and pools from Barrow to Silverdale.
