The Wyke, Grasmere

The Wyke, Grasmere [10/6/2008 by Tony Richards]

The house was built in 1801 and is set in 60 acres of woodland, fell and 100 yards of lake frontage. All this could be yours (just so long as you have the £2,500,000 asking price)

Stott Park Bobbin Mill

Stott Park Bobbin Mill, Newby Bridge [Wednesday 4/6/2008 by David and Edith Brown]

This extensive working mill was begun in 1835 to produce the wooden bobbins vital to the Lancashire spinning and weaving industries. Although small compared to other mills, some 250 men and boys (some drafted in from workhouses) worked here in often arduous conditions to produce a quarter of a million bobbins a week.

Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum)

... there is beauty if you look for it - Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) [10/6/2008, my own picture]

A native of the Caucasus mountains of south-west Asia, it was introduced in the late 19th century as an ornamental plant and is now naturalised on roadsides, hedgerows, waste places and rough grassland. It is usually about 10 foot high and contains a sap that can cause painful blistering.
