Walking along the side of Newlands Beck in the Newlands Valley. The fells behind are Cat Bells and Maiden Moor.

The path is lined with Common Gorse (Ulex europaeus - to keep up yesterdays botanic theme) . It flowers most strongly in spring, though it bears some flowers year round, hence the old country phrase: "When gorse is out of blossom, kissing's out of fashion". The flowers have a very distinctive strong coconut scent.

Rescuers called to Lakes 'crevasse' walker

A Lake District rescue team had an unusual callout on early on Tuesday: a man stuck in a crevasse. A spokesman for the team said: “There are no glaciers in Wasdale.”

 

 

 

Mountain Rescue Video

Mountain rescue teams have produced a video to explain problems they are facing.

The six-minute film features Richard Warren, chairman of the group representing all the Moutain Rescue teams in the Lake District. He explains some of the pitfalls faced by fellwalkers who don’t prepare adequately by going ill-equipped, not checking weather forecasts and not gaining navigational skills and mountain knowledge.
