I'd Rather Be in the Lake District

This section shows photographs from outside the Lakes, usually my own pictures but sometimes contributions from Lake District Now visitors.

Red Hot Chili Pepper

A bumper crop of very hot cayenne chili peppers from my greenhouse, I don't know what to do with this many of them! Apparently the heat deters mammals from eating them but birds are not sensitive to the heat so can eat them and disperse the seeds in their droppings. [taken on Tuesday 30th September]

You can find an archive of my previous "I'd Rather Be in the Lake District" pictures here.

Wainwright Fell Challenge

I am looking for 214 people to sponsor a fell by donating £15 to raise a total sum of £3210 for WaterAid. Each sponsored fell will provide one person in Africa or Asia with a lasting supply of safe, clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. In return I will add your name and short message to the Hall-of-Fame. The Hall of Fame is an ideal way to show your love of the Lake District or remember a loved one.

Julia Bradbury, presenter of the BBC Wainwright's Walks says "Come on lovers of the Lake District...choose your favourite and help to provide something we take for granted in this country - safe, clean water for people in Africa and Asia who aren't as fortunate as we are. Castle Cragg is mine - small but perfectly formed. Which one will you bag...?"

Bag your favourite fell now - once they're gone they're gone!

Most Recent Sponsor - Thank you to Pauline Clarke who has bagged Blencathra and says "Blencathra was a challenge but I did it, happy to donate to Wateraid".

Lake District Waterfall - Holme Force

Holme Beck drains the valley between Burnbank and Carling Knott, seen here at Holme Force above Loweswater. [by Roger Hiley]

The SS Holme Force was a british merchant steamer that was torpedoed on 8th August 1940. The ship was built at Whitehaven by W. S. Kennaugh & Co who named all its ships something Force (eg Stanley Force, Rydal Force).

Kelly Hall Tarn

Keswick rowing boats

Thursday 6th August - Where is this? (click here to see)

It is of course the looking out to Derwent Water and the Cat Bells from Keswick [taken by Flickr user Jon Sketchley]

The Island behind the jetty is called " Derwent Island", it is home to an 18th-century house which upset William Wordsworth when it was being built because he thought it spoilt the view ( the trees have grown since then!).

Don't forget you can view all the photos-of-the-day as a slide show or, since march, as a web page.
